Services News Publications Personnel Projects Client Log In Tribute:Terry Leach

NEWS - March 2002

We are pleased to note that our Brisbane office, under the leadership of Richard Hague, has been in operation for one year. Richard works closely with the mining engineers and mine planners from AMDAD. Richard's work with H&S has been varied over the past year and has included:

bullet

due diligence studies for a client interested in joint venture of a major multi-commodity development

bullet

spatial continuity studies of a gold mine

bullet

database construction and geological modelling of a potential South East Asian SXEW copper development

bullet

Gemcom training

The popularity of Neil Schofield's geostatistical training and grade control optimisation courses has been demonstrated by requests by numerous mining companies for courses of up to five days duration. These courses are aimed at giving attendees specific skills that will enable them to perform advanced kriging resource estimates. In combination with the application of H&S's GS3 software, the courses result in company personnel being able to undertake detailed resource estimation studies that usually are the domain of specialist consulting groups.

Phillip Hellman gave a talk at the Sydney Mining Club lunch in November, 2001. The title of the talk was "The Scientific Story Behind the Great Bre-X Swindle" and gave a very different perspective from that previously promulgated in the numerous books and articles that have been published. A near record attendance at the lunch suggests that there is still a lot of interest in the on-going Bre-X saga. Phillip's talk at PDAC in March 2002 is entitled "Were there "red flags" at Busang?".  This promises to be an interesting session and will be followed up by a talk at the Toronto Geological Discussion Group. Phillip has also addressed senior managers from CSIRO'S Division of Exploration and Mining at an internal conference on the Gold Coast.
